Is it good to graduate from UCLA mechanics and energy research?

I just left in the main physical and mechanical double University of Minnesota, and is a graduate degree in mechanical engineering. I would like to focus on research in thermodynamic studies, mainly by combustion, propulsion and alternative energy. I was admitted to UCLA and Minnesota, but it looks like UCLA is the best of these two areas. My first question is If this conclusion is generally true, and second whether it would be better to go directly to the Ph.D. at UCLA and a master or to enroll in Berkeley, Caltech, Stanford, MIT, etc for the PhD? I hope to make a career in research, and I think of myself as a national level, the R & D divisions of universities, etc. Any advice would be appreciated!

UCLA is a top 20 program for engineering so it's safe to say that a good program. Since there are no transfers to the university, you are better off staying in place for the doctorate. In addition, graduate programs are often reluctant to accept the "progress" of students without a circumstance special (for example, if a new teacher brings his graduate student with him).
